A girl aged three from Taraclia was admitted to the reanimatology section after a pail with hot water fell over her. She suffered scalds on 30% of the body and is now receiving treatment at the National Children’s Hospital “Emilian Cotaga” in Chisinau. The child was brought to Chisinau by the Aviasan service in a serious condition after doctors in Ceadir-Lunga tried to stabilize her for several days.
Gheorghe Terzinov, head of the reanimatology section of the Ceadir-Lunga hospital, has told IPN that the parents boiled water in a pail in order to bathe the child. When the mother went out of the room to bring cold water, the girl sat on the bucket and pulled it over her, scalding her legs, hands and buttocks. The parents, without consulting a doctor, put sunflower oil on the wounds. This led to the worsening of the girl’s state.
The head of the Burns Section of “Emilian Cotaga” Hospital Gheorghe Vicol called on the parents to be more attentive. Some of the children remain with scars for life, while others need difficult surgery as a result of home accidents that happen because of the adults’ fault.
A similar case occurred at the beginning of September. A child aged one year and a half scalded himself on 30% of the body. The child was admitted to the hospital with scalds for the second time in the last half a year. He continues to be in a serious state.
According to statistics of the Ministry of Health, the home accidents endanger daily the lives of eight children younger that five. A study of the REPEMOL Project “Regionalization of the pediatric emergency and intensive care services in Moldova” shows that only 66% of the parents realize the dangers to which the children are exposed at home.
