New amendments to Tobacco Control Law put up for public consultation

Parliament’s Social Protection Committeetoday came up with proposals to amend the Tobacco Control Law and other relevant legislation.

In particular, it has been proposed to fine all those counterfeiting excise stamps, whether this is done with or without the purpose of placing goods on the market.

Another proposal is to clarify definitions, such as introduction of goods, imports of goods and placement of goods on the market.

The Committee also discussed the destruction of tobacco products that do not contain health warnings. Even though this would harm the state budget, the proposal was accepted and will be proposed to Parliament for adoption.

The Committee’s chair Dan Perciun said that from 2025, the flavors of tobacco products will be banned in the Republic of Moldova, as they increase the popularity of smoking.

The amendments are to be examined by the legislature either at Thursday’s meeting or at one of the first plenary sessions to be held in early 2023.
