New administration of Teleradio-Moldova renders 100-day performance report

The new administration of the national public broadcaster Teleradio-Moldova considers that it achieved the goal of the first reformation stage – to change the attitude of the consumers of information towards the company's products. The statement was made in a news conference held to mark 100 days in office of the new administration on May 27, Info-Prim Neo reports. Constantin Marin, the head of Teleradio-Moldova, said the surveys show the number of consumers of information and of programs on Moldova 1 and Radio Moldova has increased considerably. Priority is now given to the public, not political interests. The censorship was eliminated and the plurality of opinion is promoted. A number of public debate programs were launched in the period. Some of the sittings of the Parliament and different public events are broadcast live. The emphasis in the news programs was shifted from presenting the political leaders in a favorable light to objectively presenting the reality. The institution plans to switch to digital television within a reasonable time. Constantin Marin said Teleradio-Moldova continues to meet with resistance, including because of the professional mentality, political and civil culture. The company's budget for this year is 55.8 million lei and is enough to cover the salaries and make the necessary payments. An additional 78 million lei is needed for the company to work normally and develop. Angela Sarbu, the director of Moldova 1, said her major objectives are to free the national public television from political influence and promote the plurality of ideas and professional journalism. She informed that a under a memorandum signed recently, the Government of Slovakia will provide a grant of €100,000 to the institution. A number of long-term projects will be implemented in cooperation with European and international organizations. Alexandru Dorogan, the director of Radio Moldova, said 21 titles of programs were removed from the broadcast schedule of Radio Moldova agreed for this year. 11 of them became constituents of other programs, while the other 10 were eliminated. There appeared 25 new programs and the 'duplexes' with studios of other countries were revived. According to the managers of Teleradio-Moldova, the company should be transformed into a really public one that will serve the interests of all the Moldovan people. A recent opinion poll conducted by the Romanian Institute for Assessment and Strategy (IRES) shows 50% of the respondents consider the public radio station and television channel cover the events impartially and correctly, while 58% believe the political players are treated equally.
