Over 46% of the respondents of an opinion poll haven’t yet decided which of the candidates for mayor general they will vote for in the local elections of November 5. 41.4% of those surveyed made up their mind. Slightly over 12% said that they don’t know, will not vote or didn’t answer. The data is contained in the iData Barometer for August 2023.



Asked what political parties that will put forward candidates they will support in the local elections, 19% of those polled said the Party of Action and Soldairty (PAS), 11.8% - the Bloc of Communists and Socialists, 6.4% - the National Alternative Movement. 2% and less mentioned other parties.



“What is very important is the fact that almost 10% of those surveyed would vote for independent candidates. 5.9% would not take part in elections. 35.5% don’t know who they would vote for, while 1.9% didn’t answer this question,” Mihai Bologan, executive director of the sociological company iData, stated in a news conference hosted by IPN.

The respondents from the municipality of Chisinau were asked about their voting intention, being provided with a list of candidates who had been confirmed by the time the poll data started to be collected. The respondents could also name an own candidate. The survey authors admit that the data will change when new candidates appear and the election campaign starts. This way, 47.3% of all the respondents would vote for incumbent mayor Ion Ceban, which is almost 62% of the decided ones. This is followed by PAS candidate Lilian Carp with 15% or almost 20% of the decided ones, the candidate of the Party “Dignity and Truth Platform” Victor Chironda with 4.1% or 5.4% of the decided ones, etc.

Asked about Moldova’s entry into the European Union, 59.4% of those interviewed said they are in favor, while 32.5% said they are against. Slightly over 8% don’t know or didn’t answer. “Compared with May 2023, the European course became more attractive and comes again close to the limit 60%, which was witnessed especially last year. So, the pro-European sentiment in the Republic of Moldova recovered slightly,” said Mihai Bologan.

“Let’s see where the unionist sentiment is. 37.7% or over one third of all the respondents consider that the Republic of Moldova should unite with Romania. However, more than half, 54.5%, are against. Following the development of this indicator, we see that this year until May, the unionist sentiment had declined to under 31%, but now it rose slightly. In the long run, we have about one third or more than one third of people who are for the union with Romania,” stated the company’s director.

The poll covered a sample of 1,021 persons from 366 localities and was conducted during August 31 – September 7. The margin of sampling error is 3%.
