NBM offers final data about Moldova’s external debt in 2021

The National Bank of Moldova provided final data about the external debt of the Republic of Moldova in 2021. The gross external debt rose by 7.8% to US$8.765,61 billion. This is 64.1% of the Gross Domestic Product (-6.4 percentage points on December 31, 2020), IPN reports.

In 2021, Moldova’s current account (balance of payments) deficit of the increased substantially compared with 2020, in terms of absolute value and as share of the GDP. The deficit was US$1.699,35 billion, up 91.6%. The current account represented 12.4% of the GDP.  Such dynamics were influenced by the considerable rise in the external trade deficit and the decline in the primary surplus, while the balances of secondary revenues and services improved.

The capital account deficit was US$51.02 million, down 22.3% on 2020, which is -0.4% of the GDP.

The financial account resulted in net capital inflows totaling US$ 1.715,57 billion following the net rise in liabilities by US$1.322,74 billion, generated by effective transactions and the net decline in external financial assets of domestic residents by US$392.83 million.

Moldova’s international investment position on December 31, 2021 was US$-5.218,42 billion or 38.1% of the GDP. The debt balance was by 4.1% higher than at the end of 2020.
