NATO is not ready to cross the Prut, opinion

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is not yet ready to cross the Prut River, Victor Juc, vice director of the Institute of Legal and Political Research of the Academy of Sickness, said in the talk show “Geopolitics” on Noroc TV channel, IPN reports.

“The fact that the Republic of Moldova’s problem was not included in the agenda of the Civil Security Committee for the reason that the country does not have an exit to the Black Sea is not accidental,” stated Victor Juc.

The researcher noted it is very hard to convince the Russian Federation to pull out the Operational Group and the arsenal from the Transnistrian region. “Broad international co-participation is needed here, with Ukraine - a green corridor, with France – to bring special furnaces to utilize the non-transportable armament,” he said.

Historian Sergiu Musteata noted that there are no real prospects of settling the Transnistrian conflict if the leaders from Chisinau and Tiraspol do not openly discuss the steps that should be taken. “Without the consent of the neighboring states and of the great powers, I don’t think a swift solution will be identified in this regard. Russia should be persuaded to withdraw its army and to respect our status of neutrality and the agreements that were signed by the two independent states,” he said.

According to the historian, the problem of involvement of NATO is delicate as, even if the Republic of Moldova is an associate of NATO, it cannot request much from this military organization. “We can ask for mediation in facilitating discussions, not yet for the direct involvement of the NATO member states,” said Sergiu Musteata.

According to the two invitees of the program, the pullout of the Operational Group of Russian Troops that stays illegally on the country’s territory is now a priority for Moldova.
