Nationwide referendum could be held simultaneously with parliamentary and presidential elections

A nationwide referendum could be held on the day of parliamentary or presidential elections. An amendment providing for this was proposed by PAS MP Veronica Rosca to the draft law amending the Electoral Code. The legislative initiative was adopted by Parliament after giving it a final reading, IPN reports.

The bill was drafted by a group of MPs of the group of the Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS) following proposals made by the Central Electoral Commission. This draft law aims to remove particular legislative shortcomings, including technical ones, noticed after the local elections held this autumn.

The authors propose adjusting the Electoral Code notions referring to political campaigning and the Register of electoral officials. Measures are also proposed to make transparent information on financing of the election campaign and activities of political parties. As to the applicability of the Electoral Code provisions regarding the period of presidential elections, the authors note that it is necessary to make a distinction in terms of the criteria determining their organization.

Recently, President Maia Sandu asked Parliament to organize a referendum in which citizens should pronounce on the entry into the European Union. This electoral exercise will most likely take place simultaneously with the presidential election at the end of next year. Earlier, several political players demanded to organize referendums on the development direction of the Republic of Moldova.
