National security commission votes in favor of joining CIS antiterrorism program

Moldova could become a party to the Program of Cooperation of the Member States of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) on the Fight against Terrorism and Other Violent Manifestations of Extremism for 2017-2019. The Parliament’s commission on national security, defense and public order on January 23 approved a bill to this effect, IPN reports.

According to the Parliament’s press service, the goal of the program is to extend and strengthen the cooperation between the CIS member states in preventing, identifying, counteracting and following acts of terrorism and extremism, to coordinate the operational investigation measures and special operations for prophylactic purposes and to improve specialist training and cooperation with expert international organizations.

The bill defines two special clauses. One of the clauses refers to participation in measures to fight terrorism and extremism within the CIS, in each case separately, depending on the provisions of the national legislation. The second clause provides that Moldova does not consider itself bound by the commitments that derive from the content of the cooperation program’s provisions concerning adjustment of the legislation, formulation of model laws and holding of common training for military forces.

In the same meeting, the commission examined and approved a bill to ratify the agreement between the Governments of the Republic Moldova and the Republic of Azerbaijan on cooperation in the military sector.

The bills are to be debated and adopted by the legislative body.
