National Patrolling Inspectorate launches bicycle patrolling service

Besides cars and motorcycles, patrolling inspectors will also bicycles in their work. The bicycle patrolling service of the National Patrolling Inspectorate was launched on October 7 in front of the U.S. Embassy in Chisinau, which supported the project. Inspectors on bicycles made a tour to present the patrolling units of transport up to the square of the Metropolitan Cathedral in central Chisinau, IPN reports.

Patrolling inspectors on bikes will be present mainly in pedestrian and recreational areas in Chisinau. Afterward, this could be extended nationwide, depending on the results that will be achieved at the pilot stage. According to the authorities, this type of patrolling is new for Moldova, not yet for the developed states that widely showed its advantages. This model of movement enables to come closer to the community and to reach places that are inaccessible in the case of road and even pedestrian patrolling.

General Police Inspectorate chief Alexandru Panzari expressed his conviction that this service will prove its efficiency in the nearest future and will contribute to increasing the people’s safety and confidence in the police force. “In fact, bicycle patrolling is an activity of the community police. This concept centers on the people and their needs and the police in the near future will base their whole activity on this,” he stated.

Attending the event, U.S. Ambassador James Pettit said the goal of this type of police activity is to serve the community based on a partnership that reveals the real problems faced by the people. “I want to believe that the new subdivision will distinguish itself and will manage to positively contribute to the way in which the public perceives the police,” stated the diplomat.

The bicycle patrolling service was instituted with financial support from the U.S. Embassy in Chisinau within a project to the value of over 1.3 million lei. The Embassy also organized training seminars for bicycle patrolling officers, which were conducted by experts from the U.S.
