People of culture, officials, politicians and hundreds of ordinary people came together at the National Opera House to bid farewell to the National Opera Prima Donna Maria Biesu. She was accompanied on the last road with tears in the eyes and flowers as well as applause, Info-Prim Neo reports. Moldova’s President Nicolae Timofti said that the loss of the great opera singer is a loss for the whole country. “Maria Biesu is a star wit planetary name. She had a unique voice that was a gift from God. She worked hard to develop and show her talent,” he stated. People’s artist Mihai Munteanu said that during 50 years Maria Biesu dedicated her life to the national art and the whole country. He stressed that with the passing away of the Prima Donna, the national opera’s heart stopped beating. He promised her that the festival “Maria Biesu” will continue to exist. Composer Gheorghe Mustea said that Maria Biesu worked all her life and, owing to this enormous work, she won those ‘superlative’ titles and the people can now call her the golden voice of the 20th-21st centuries. Romanian soprano Felicia Filip and Russian opera singer Vladislav Piavco, who is the chairman of the World Union of Musicians, also came to bid farewell to Maria Biesu. Ion Lesan, the head of the music high school of Volentiri village, were the Prima Donna was born, said the whole village is grieving the death of the great singer. According to him, the local authorities decided that their high school will be named “Maria Biesu” and a commemorative plaque will be set up on the singer’s parental house. Maria Biesu was born on August 3, 1935 in Volintiri village, Stefan-Voda district. She was a people’s artist, a laureate of Prize Awards, university teacher, academician, Doctor Honoris-Causa, and a holder of the Order of the Republic and of the National Order “Romania’s Star”. Maria Biesu died on May 16 at the age of 76. The day of her burial was decreed National Mourning Day.
