National Opera House administration says ballet artists should retire after 20 years of service

The administration of the National Opera House asked the parliamentary commission for culture, education, youth, sport and mass media to modify the Labor Code so that the ballet artist, wind instrumentalists and circus artists are allowed to retire after 20 years of service, Info-Prim Neo reports. “A 60-year-old artist cannot play the part of Juliet or Romeo as the appearance is not appropriate,” said the artistic manager of the ballet troupe Mihai Caftanat. “In most of the countries, the ballet artists retire after working for 20 years. I do not understand why the Ministry of Finance did not accept this rule.” Caftanat also said that by up to eight ballet performances should be staged every month, but there are presented only by three performances. “The law does not work in our country. Therefore, the National Opera House encounters difficulties. We have many artists that cannot jump and spin round. We do not want to fire them and offer them to play secondary parts or become teachers. Time has come to make a decision. Otherwise, we will not succeed,” Mihai Caftanat said. The administration of the National Opera House said the conflict between the generations can be solved if the House’s Artistic Board certifies the ballet artists. Twenty of the 70 employees of the theater have a length of service of 35 years.
