National Movement “Statehood” launched in Chisinau

An initiative group consisting of civic activists, ex-ambassadors and NGO heads constituted the National Movement “Statehood” . According to initiative group member Igor Caldare, among the movement’s goals are to preserve the sovereignty and permanent neutrality of the Republic of Moldova, to hamper the actions that can lead to the liquidation of statehood and to unite society.

In a news conference at IPN on April 6, members of the initiative group said the idea of creating this movement appeared following the recent events that took place in Chisinau, including the unionist march mounted on March 27. These consider that the current administration of Moldova destroys the state in a methodical way.

The movement’s secretary Mihail Lupashko said the materialization of the idea of Moldova’s union with Romania can lead to a military conflict in the country and the whole region. This can result in thousands of victims. The danger of Moldova’s statehood being liquidated is one of the main reasons why the movement was founded. This can lead to a number of conflicts, including military and religious ones.

Initiative group member Simion Lungu considers that a unifying force is now needed in Moldova. “Our first task is to organize the professionals from this country into a bloc so as to take the country out of the drift. The second task is to stop the identity crisis as all those who want can now mock our national identity,” he stated, adding that a social dialogue will be initiated to deal with the identity problem.

Group member Alexandru Popa, civic activist, said that Moldova is witnessing a situation of revolution as the people are not dissatisfied with the living conditions, while the government can do nothing and does not meet society’s demands. Society is now divided into too many groups. Therefore, the population should reunite and built together an independent and flourishing state.

The same call to consolidation was made by Moldova’s former ambassador to Romania Emilian Ciobu. He said that the current political elite of Moldova work not for the people, but for pecuniary interests.

The founders of the National Movement “Statehood” said that the congress to constitute the movement will be soon held to choose the administration, agree the strategies and decide the future steps.
