National Library mounts anniversary exhibition dedicated to Grigore Vieru

The debut books, bibliophile editions, vinyl records with music on verses written by Grigore Vieru, a total of 150 collection documents, were exhibited at the National Library on the occasion of the 85th anniversary of the poet’s birth. The exhibition entitled “Grigore Vieru – Poet of the Hurried Century” can be visited until March 31 in the library’s central block, IPN reports.

National Library director general Elena Pintilei said the exhibition includes the complete works of Grigore Vieru, which have been kept at the institution she manages during many years. The National Library is responsible for the work of the national writers. Grigore Vieru was a devoted friend of the National Library. He even became a faithful reader of the institution. He held most of the meetings with his readers here, launched his books here, etc. “He remains one of the readers of the National Library. We loyally keep this name and the work of Sunday man Grigore Vieru,” stated Elena Pintilei.

Attending the inauguration of the exhibition, writer Iulian Filip underlined the topicality of the poet’s works. Grigore Vieru was so optimistic that he declared that the union will be achieved in ten years. “Several decades passed and he became sadder. We see a lot of sadness in his poems as the pace of returning to normality is not the one we want,” said the writer.

Teacher Viorica Bolocan said that Grigore Vieru’s works embrace all the values of this land, of this nation and it’s a pity not to learn from the bard’s poems. The works of Grigore Vieru have always been present in the activities she carried out with children. “We are obliged to as his poems are too nice. He used the simplest words, but knew to place them so as to astonish us. This is Vieru’s talent. He polished the verses up to perfection,” stated Viorica Bolocan.

Vice director of the National Archive Ion Golovatyi said the exhibition includes documents, photographs, manuscripts from the personal store of Grigore Vieru that are kept at their archive. “I think the work of Grigore Vieru marked many generations and will continue to mark others. I believe Grigore Vieru made history and wrote history,” he noted.

Grigore Vieru was born in Pererita village of Briceni district on February 14, 1935. He is loved and known by people of all ages. He wrote multiple poems for children and was given the most prestigious international children’s literature award – Andersen Diploma of Honor. He was also conferred the honorific title of People’s Writer and the Order of the Republic. Alongside Doina and Ion Aldea-Teodorovici, he created real anthems, such as “At Capriana Monastery”, “Eminescu” and “Tear of Our Language”. A boulevard in Chisinau and a number of national education institutions bear the name of Grigore Vieru.

The poet died on January 18, 2009 as a result of a road accident not far from Chisinau that occurred on January 16, one month before turning 74.
