National Library launches National Calendar 2025

The National Library of the Republic of Moldova has launched the "National Calendar 2025", an encyclopedic reference book dedicated to the Year of Mihai Eminescu. The event took place on the occasion of the National Day of Culture and involved cultural and academic personalities. The calendar is a continuation of the tradition started 33 years ago, with the publication of the "Librarian's Calendar", which became the "National Calendar" in 2000, IPN reports.

According to the Library’s director Elena Pintilei, the National Calendar is the visiting card of the National Library and the Republic of Moldova. “For two years, this publication has been sent to diplomatic missions, promoting the image of the country and our cultural values," said Elena Pintilei.

The work has 544 pages and includes 660 memorable dates and about 600 national and international anniversary, commemorative and professional events. This year's edition is dedicated to the 175th anniversary of Mihai Eminescu's birth, with a special design of the covers, an article dedicated to the poet and a selective bibliography.

The calendar marks important anniversaries, such as the 90th anniversary of the birth of Grigore Vieru and the 150th anniversary of the birth of Queen Marie of Romania. Also, historical events, such as the 555th anniversary of the Battle of Lipnic, are commemorated.

Among the personalities covered are philologist Nicolae Mătcaș, ethnomusicologist Andrei Tamazlâcaru, flute player Vasile Iovu, historian Gheorghe Negru, poet Claudia Partole and other important representatives of the culture and science of the Republic of Moldova and Romania. The calendar also commemorates historical figures, such as King Ferdinand I, Queen Marie, writer Liviu Rebreanu, and international leaders, including Margaret Thatcher.

Cultural and educational importance

Veronica Borș, deputy director of the National Library, stressed that this work represents "a remarkable managerial report made thanks to the skills of professionals in the field and the visions of our predecessors". She highlighted the continuity of the project and its impact on the general public, including researchers, the press and librarians.

Elena Pintilei added that the "National Calendar" is a source of inspiration for promoting the culture and image of the Republic of Moldova. "This is an essential work for documentation, which provides an up-to-date bibliography and information about remarkable personalities, historical data and important events," explained the National Library’s director.

History and future of the calendar

In its 33 years of existence, the "National Calendar" has evolved from a simple list of literature to a reference encyclopedic book used in various fields. Currently, there are plans to digitize the calendar, facilitate access to information and meet the needs of a wider audience.

The team of authors includes recognized specialists, such as Elena Barbos-Balinschi, Maria Ciobanu and Elena Harconiță, who were guided by an editorial board led by academician Andrei Eșanu. This interdisciplinary cooperation ensures valuable and well-documented content, reflecting the cultural and historical heritage of the Republic of Moldova.

The "National Calendar 2025" continues to be a reference work, reaffirming the role of the National Library as a promoter of cultural and scientific values.
