National Library hosts events devoted to Japanese culture

Books by Japanese writers and about Japan and toys typical of the Japanese culture were displayed at an exhibition that was mounted at the National Library on June 19. The exhibition “Japan as the country of culture and civilization in the colors of spring”, alongside the exhibition of flower arrangements in Japanese style ”Ikebana as the art full of symbols”, can be visited by July 10, IPN reports.

According to Japan’s Ambassador to Moldova Masanobu Yoshii, culture embodies the tangible and spiritual values created by mankind, while the library is the thesaurus-institution. The Japanese literature can boast of the first novel written worldwide and includes some of the oldest texts. “I’m very glad that there are multiple Japanese books that contribute to cultural development at the National Library,” stated the diplomat.

National Library director general Elena Pintilei said the cooperation with Japan is very important for the Library, while the events devoted to the Japanese culture and civilization hosted by the Library will give a new dimension to the existing cooperation.

Also today, the National Library hosted a conference entitled  “Libraries and librarians. Interesting experiences for the Republic of Moldova” that was moderated by Hermina Anghelescu, professor of the Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan, the U.S.

The professor said that Japan, which is the third largest economy, devotes special attention to education and, implicitly, to libraries that support education, informing and reading. The first public library in Japan opened its doors in 1872, while the Japan Library Association was founded 136 years ago.

“The culture of calligraphy, writing and of keeping the cultural values for posterity and the tradition of supporting the libraries place Japan among the top countries that attach special importance to the institution of library and bibliotechonomic education,” stated Hermina Anghelescu. Japan has over 3,000 public libraries, over 750 university libraries and 3,000 libraries in education institutions.

The event involved poet Vasile Romanciuc, who recited several haiku poems, which are Japanese poems consisting of three verses.
