The libraries in Moldova must ensure the people’s access to information, while the librarians should provide an efficient mechanism of access to information. In the course of this year, there will be developed a support program for public libraries and worked out a new vision for the national libraries. The subject was disused in the 27th Annual Scientific Bibliological Symposium “Libraries in the perspective of sustainable development: bibliotechonomic and human dimensions” that was held at the National Library, IPN reports.
Secretary of State at the Ministry of Culture Andrei Chistol said the library of the 21st century should become attractive for the public, should increase its visibility and should adopt a flexible and practical attitude receptive to novelties. “The public libraries in the Republic of Moldova became dynamic community centers that offer the users a variety of modern services and opportunities of involvement in interactive activities by ensuring access to modern technologies and support on the part of trained librarians. Today we can speak about over 1,300 modern services provided by libraries, over US$8 million invested in equipment, 1,070 renovated libraries and 13 robotic clubs. The communities are thus provided with a better platform for development and experience exchange,” stated Andrei Chistol.
National Library director Elena Pintilei said the institution is a bibliotechonomic center for the whole system of libraries and they plan to extend cooperation with the public libraries. The Center for Statistics, Development and Research and the Center for Bibliotechonomy Formation and Information Sciences instituted at the National Library constantly contribute to creating new offers for the visitors of the Library. The libraries should act in partnership and the Partners Fair mounted inside the Library is a relevant successful example.
The symposium also centered on the promotion and achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals 2030, consolidation of the national system of libraries, national and institutional strategies in the field, strengthening of professional relations, results and problems in the activity of the network of libraries and professional communication between members, implementation of modern services at libraries and other issues.
The event had the Law on Libraries adopted by Parliament last July as a point of reference.
