The libraries in Moldova will be annually supplied with 400,000 to 500,000 volumes of books in English thanks to the project “Books for Moldova”. A memorandum to this effect was signed between the Ministry of Culture, a number of charity organizations and the National Library, IPN reports.
The “Stiftelsen Moldavien” Foundation, together with Hope 4, in 2022 launched an IT education program for students. The limited linguistic abilities among students, teachers and adults in general was one of the main problems encountered. The low level of knowledge of English was the reason why information was assimilated inadequately. After visiting a large number of school libraries, the donors ascertained that there was not enough English literature. Consequently, it was decided to collect books in the UK, through the “Salvation Army”, and distribute them free of charge in Moldova, at the discretion of the National Library, said Robert Blomberg, president of the Swedish Foundation in Moldova, which supports community development projects.
Minister of Culture Sergiu Prodan noted that English is predominant in the education sector, transnational cultural exchanges and, especially, in the scientific and IT fields. “English is a common denominator in social exchange and communication in general. It’s great that this way it will become more accessible to readers of all ages,” said the official.
Under the agreement, 40% of the books will be intended for children and teenagers, others will be novels, cookbooks and specialty books.
