The national football team of Moldova produced a surprise in the UEFA Euro 2016 qualifying rounds. It tied with Russia’s team 1-1 in Moscow, IPN reports.
Alexandru Gatcan was close to opening the score in the first half, but missed the chance right before the goal. Russia played better in the second half and scored in the 73rd minute from a penalty kick transformed by Artiom Dziuba. Moldova tied in only one minute through Alexandru Epureanu. The captain of the ‘tricolors’ scored with the head from a corner kick taken by Alexandru Dedov. This draw allowed Moldova to avoid the last place in the group with one point, as Liechtenstein.
“We were eager to score a positive result in Moscow. The good organization and our efforts helped us to score a meritorious draw,” Moldova manager Alexandru Curteian told a news conference.
“We didn’t underestimate the opponent. We prepared seriously for this game. We hoped for a victory until the last moment,” said the coach of Russia Fabio Capello.
Moldova plays the next match at home on November 15, against Liechtenstein.
