National flags to be flown at half-mast today

The national flags all over the country will be flown at half-mast today. Under a decree issued by President Maia Sandu, June 9, when folk and light music singer Iurie Sadovnic will be buried, was declared a national day of mourning in Moldova, IPN reports.

In the obituary signed by President Sandu, condolences are offered to the grieving family and to all those who loved and appreciated the singer.

A moment’s silence will be observed at 12 noon. The funeral will be broadcast live by the National Public Broadcaster “Teleradio-Moldova”.


Iurie Sadovnic (December 14, 1951 – June 7, 2021) was born in Jura village of Râbniţa district. He was the soloist of a number of vocal-instrumental groups and created and managed the band “Legenda” (1983-1996). He wrote a poetry volume entitled “I will depart to green forest” (1999). His last album titled “Escape” became in time the testament of the late singer.

Iurie Sadovnic was awarded the title of Emeritus Artist of the MSSR (1984), the Civic Merit Medal (1993), “Mihai Eminescu” Medal (2000), the title of People’s Artist of the Republic of Moldova (2011) and the Order of the Republic (2015), which is the highest state award.
