National energy regulator modifies gas tariff calculation methodology

The end-users of gas will no longer incur costs related to gas transportation. The Administration Board of the National Agency for Energy Regulation modified the methodology for calculating the regulated natural gas tariffs in a public meeting on January 13, IPN reports.

The modifications were made after Parliament on November 20, 2015 abrogated the so-called ‘Furdui amendment’ to the Law on Natural Gas. This amendment provided that all the incomes earned from the transportation of natural gas will be used by SA Moldovagaz, while the costs related to the transportation will be covered by end-users.

At the beginning of the meeting, Sergiu Ciobanu, in the name of the Agency’s Board of Directors, said the Agency will revise down the natural gas tariffs for end-users after the modifications made to the calculation methodology are published in the Official Gazette. It’s yet too early to say how much the tariffs will be decreased. Independent experts anticipate these could be reduced by 5%.

Currently, the consumers who use up to 30 cubic meters of gas a month pay 6.55 lei per cubic meter of gas, while the tariffs for a higher consumption is 6.83 lei. The last time the National Agency for Energy Regulation increased the gas tariffs on November 13, 2015, by 9.8%.
