National drug producers obliged to comply with EU standards

The national drug producers were offered almost seven months to adjust the quality of medicines to the European standards. The rule will come into force in October and is essential for signing the Free Trade Agreement with the EU, IPN reports.

In a meeting of the commission for ensuring the security of pharmaceutical assistance, Alexandru Coman, director general of the Agency for Medicines and Medical Devices, said the foreign producers that do not have the GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) standard were banned from filing applications for selling drugs in Moldova from February 1. The national producers have several months at their disposal yet.

According to Alexandru Coman, if the national producers do not manage to implement the GMP standard within the offered period, a part of the medicines will be classed as food supplements. But the producers will be unable to sell these drugs in the country, only in the states were the GMP standard is not required.

In Moldova there are 28 producers of medicines.
