National Council of PSRM condemns Constitutional Court’s decision

The National Council of the Party of Socialists (PSRM) firmly condemns the Constitutional Court’s decision whereby the President’s decree to hold a national consultative referendum was declared unconstitutional. In a statement issued after the Council’s meeting on July 28, the party says the Court’s decision is anti-people and was taken with serious violations of the national legislation and international legal norms. It intends to mount protests as of September 24, including in support of the initiatives of the President of the Republic of Moldova and against the political activism of the Constitutional Court, IPN reports.

“In any democratic state, the people’s will is sacred. Direct democracy expressed by national referendum is the simplest expression of the people’s will. The Constitutional Court’s decision by which the people are banned from expressing their will is anti-people, anti-democratic and biased in character. A paradoxical situation appears: the Constitutional Court, whose members were elected by no one, takes political decisions that annul decisions by the authorities elected by the people, first of all the President of the Republic of Moldova, for whom most of the people who took part in elections voted,” reads the  statement.

According to the PSRM, the situation becomes more absurd when politically motivated decisions are taken by judges with the nationally of another state, who swore an oath of allegiance to this state, undermining thus the people’s confidence in the country’s legal system. The National Council of the PSRM expressed its full support for the President’s intention to organize a referendum to consult the people about the four key issues proposed for the plebiscite.

The PSRM noted the detailed plan of the protests will be agreed the coming days.
