National Council for Statistics to be created under Government

A National Council for Statistics will be set up under the Government to develop and promote official statistics and to ensure the objective, transparent and scientific character of the methodologies, indicators and classifications used in statistical activity. A decision to this effect was drafted by the National Bureau of Statistics and was proposed for public consultations, IPN reports.

The Council will monitor the implementation of statistics programs and the strategic planning activity, will assess the observance of the official statistics principles and will give advice on the identified problems. It will also promote conceptions, methods, models, modern techniques and instruments for statistical activity by which to ensure the quality of statistics furnished at internal and foreign levels.

The Council will consist of 11 members. The director general of the National Bureau of Statistics will head the Council, while the state secretary at the Ministry of Economy and Infrastructure will serve as deputy chairperson. The senior consultant of the Bureau’s National Statistics System Development Service will be the Council’s secretary.
