The National Border Police College in Ungheni will be reorganized into the Center of Excellence in Border Security. According to a proposal published by the Ministry of the Interior on particip.gov.md, the new education institution will train new specialists in border security. Two professions, of control unit sub-officer and cynologist-sub-officer, and three specialties, of patrol chief, border police cynologist instructor and technician-intendant, were included in the program of studies, IPN reports.

The informative note to the bill says analyses showed that the Border Police witness a shortage of personnel and measures should be taken to increase the number of specialists. The goal of the reorganization is to efficiently correlate the demand, given the high number of vacancies at the subdivisions of the Border Police, and the supply through professional training ensured by the National Border Police College. Another goal is to modernize the education process and to improve the services provided in the field of professional training.

National Border Police College director Veaceslav Babalici has told IPN that the education institution now trains specialists during two years. When the College is reorganized into a Center of Excellence, it will be possible to train border police sub-officers for a year. “This will enable the students trained for a year into agents to improve qualifications at the Center of Excellence for another post, with a much wider range of powers,” stated Veaceslav Babalici.

He also said that the specialties will be taught during two years, while the professions during a year. Such specialists until now have been trained within short-term courses at the College. “The given training will help fill the vacancies at the Border Police. Each graduate will be able to find a job,” said Babalici. The Center of Excellence in Border Security is to start work in 2018-2019.
