The construction of the first National Antiviolence Center was completed in Ciuciuleni village of Hancesti district. The center will accommodate up to 17 women with children, who became victims of domestic violence, Info-Prim Neo reports. The project is implemented by the association Akti-Hifler fur Kinder (“Help that reaches children”). In a news conference held in Chisinau on July 1, Valentina Geamana, the deputy head of the association's representative office in Italy, said a drugstore, a hairdresser's, a medical center and a tailoring workshop will be constructed within the project. The women living at the center and persons from the village will be able to work there. There will be created 50 workplaces. The women will remain at the National Antiviolence Center until they find a place to live or solve their problems, but for not more than half a year. “We aim to create decent living conditions for these women. The services will be free of charge for all the guests who will visit the center,” Valentina Geamana said. A common social assistance network for this vulnerable group of women is planned to be created in concert with social workers from different districts and the inspectorate for minors. Herr Peter Lanthaler, the head of the representative office in Italy, said the number of female victims of domestic violence in Italy is lower, but there are much more social assistance units than in Moldova. Mayor of Ciuciuleni Maria Bezer said the idea of founding the center is beneficial. The women will be more powerful and independent when the center starts work, she considers. The National Antiviolence Center started to be built in December 2009. The other constructions will be finished by March 2011. A sum of €600,000 of the about €1 million earmarked for the project has been spent so far.
