National anticorruption authority does not have all instruments needed to fight corruption

The National Anticorruption Center (NAC) does not yet have the necessary instruments to prevent and fight cases of corruption, said representatives of the institution. On the other hand, representatives of civil society consider the authorities have always had the necessary leverage. The issue was developed in the talk show “Emphasis on today” on TVR Moldova channel, IPN reports.

“The contingent of those who are investigated by the NAC is very attentive to the examination of their cases so that the law is obeyed. Any deviation from the law represents abuse. We cannot allow abuses. That’s why we need additional legislative instruments,” explained the Center’s vice director Cristina Tarna.

She noted that a law is needed to protect the integrity informants. “A law on integrity informants is needed to protect those who will report cases of corruption. This law should stipulate punishments for those who will try to take revenge on integrity informants. In time, the integrity informants become witnesses in trials and are subject to risks. These must be sure that they will not be subject to abuses by their chiefs, will not be dismissed or exposed to other risks,” stated Cristina Tarna.

On the other hand, Galina Bostan, director of the Center for the Analysis and Prevention of Corruption, in the same program said the authorities have always had the leverage needed to fight corruption. “There are always instruments available for reacting. The truth is that inaction is justified by lack of legislative leverage,” she noted.
