“Today, the country’s Constitution inspires the people with hope that we have a state with the rule of law, where everyone accepts the authority of the law and where the basic human rights are respected,” said acting Prime Minister Natalia Gherman. In a message on the occasion of the Day of the Constitution of the Republic of Moldova, Natalia Gherman notes that a good Constitution is a clear sign of the degree of maturity and democracy of a constitutional system, IPN reports.
“The country’s Constitution ensures the irreproachable functioning of the democratic institutions, enshrines the democratic principle of separation of powers in the state and, surely, the national sovereignty that belongs to the people” reads the message.
Natalia Gherman said the fundamental law in the state must have equal chances to resist the test of time and the change of opportunities and ideas in society. The Constitution is not unchangeable and should adjust to the political, economic and social developments and transformations in the country.
“The current political circumstances bring us again before the text of the Constitution. We admit the imminence of the opportunity to state our opinions in a constitutional referendum centering on one of the most significant and vulnerable articles of the Constitution – Article 78, which defines the method of electing the President of the Republic of Moldova,” stated the acting Prime Minister.
According to Natalia Gherman, this exercise will contribute to improving the relations between the people and the governing elite in the spirit of representative democracy, ensuring the harmonization of the national norms with the European ones and the implementation of authentic democratic values in the collective conscience of the Moldovan people.
The Constitution of the Republic of Moldova as an independent and sovereign state was adopted by Parliament on July 29, 1994.
