Natalia Gherman confident Moldova can file application to join EU until 2018

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Natalia Gherman considers that Moldova can file an application to join the European Union during the term in office of the current Government, which ends in November 2018, IPN reports.

“Everything depends on us, if we make progress in implementing the Association Agreement with the EU and take concrete steps to ensure changes. The development of the relations with the EU will be then a natural process. We must make headway in the process of doing reforms so that there is no doubt as to the political will and will of society. We must pave the way. I think this will not happen very late. It will happen during the term of the current Government. It is evident that we need political stability as we cannot advance if the Government is replaced every six-eight months,” Natalia Gherman said in the talk show “Public space” on Radio Moldova station.

The official stated that the country lags behind in three areas – reformation of the justice sector, the fight against corruption and ensuring of stability in the financial-banking sector. “When there is a minority Government, it is very hard to promote reforms in these areas. Now that we have a Government that is supported by a pro-European majority alliance, we must recover the lost time,” she said.

As to the Independence Day marked on August 27, Natalia Gherman said that during the 24 years of independence Moldova asserted itself as a democratic state where the basic human rights and freedoms are respected, where the principles of market economy prevail and where the people are really free to express their will to follow the path of European integration.
