The National Agency for Energy Regulation (NAER) approved the extension for the next ten years of the activity of the BRM EST gas trading platform. According to the authorities, this decision ensures the continuity of the mechanism for setting a fair gas price, based on supply and demand, and promotes transparency on the energy market in Moldova, IPN reports.

The NAER said that the BRM EST platform, active since 2022 in Moldova, plays a significant role in creating a fair and transparent market for the sale and purchase of natural gas. Operating in a secure online space, it allows suppliers and other authorized participants to carry out efficient transactions and quickly adjust gas volumes when an imbalance occurs in the network, thus preventing price fluctuations and supply disruptions.

Through this platform, which includes a number of market segments, such as the Gas Forward Market and the Spot Market, energy players have at their disposal flexible tools to meet short and long-term commercial needs. In addition, the balancing platform contributes to maintaining a functional transport system.

Although household consumers do not participate directly in transactions, the correct functioning of the platform has a major impact on price stability and security of gas supply, the Agency noted.

The legislation provides for the gradual transition to the free market in the coming years, which will allow direct negotiations between suppliers and consumers, and BRM EST will provide the necessary framework for a safe and fair transition.

Last year, almost 9 TWh of gas were traded on the platform, covering a large part of domestic consumption. Starting this year, the platform will publish daily indicative prices for gas, in order to provide a clear picture of the evolution of the market.

At the same time, the NAER reiterated that these measures are essential for protecting consumers' interests and for strengthening the energy independence of the Republic of Moldova in an increasingly competitive energy context.
