NAER explains why prices of oil products grew at start of year

A liter of gasoline coded 95 on January 4 will cost 21.30 lei/liter, up 0.54 leii/liter, while a liter of gasoline will cost 17.73 lei/liter, up 0.25 lei/liter. According to the National Agency for Energy Regulation (NAER), the rise in fuel prices this year is primarily due to the fact that the excise duties grew as from January 1, 2022, IPN reports.

In December 2020, it was decided to increase the excise duties gradually, over a period of three years (2021 – 2023), on most of the goods on which such a type of tax is imposed. On January 1, 2022, the excise duty for a tonne of imported gasoline grew by 586 lei, while for a tonne of diesel fuel by 237 lei. The final pump price also grew as a result.

This fact, together with the last upward tendencies on international stock exchanges, generated a rise in price ceilings for the main oil products of standard type.

NAER said the one-off price rise due to the higher excise duties is applied on the first day of the new year. In continuation, the daily prices of the main oil products will be influenced exclusively by the level of quotations on international stock exchanges and the exchange rate of the national currency against the U.S. dollar.
