NAC seizes thousands of dollars and euros from office of Government official

Officers of the National Anticorruption Center (NAC) confiscated US$40,700, €1,580 and 24,540 lei from the office of the deputy secretary general of the State Chancellery Eduard Banaruc. The inspection was carried out within a legal case started over illegal wiretapping at the State Main Tax Inspectorate. Eduard Banaruc was summoned to present himself at the NAC on February 18 to provide explanations as to the origin of the money, Info-Prim Neo reports, quoting a communiqué from the Center. On February 15, NAC officers and prosecutors carried out inspections at the State Main Tax Inspectorate. As a result, the Inspectorate’s head Nicolae Vicol was put under arrest for 72 hours, being suspected of passive corruption, abuse of power, and violation of the inviolability of private life. One of the NAC officers suspected of being involved in this case was also arrested. The communiqué says that a number of company officials will be questioned by anticorruption prosecutors and officers in the Vicol case. The prosecutors call on the economic entities that were affected by the illegalities of representative offices of the Tax Inspectorate to make depositions at the NAC.
