The Chisinau Municipality has withdrawn the construction license for a church that was supposed to be built in a public square in front of the Kentford Building after a journalistic investigation revealed that the constructor planned to build family crypts for the city's rich in the church's basement, Info-Prim Neo reports. Mayor Dorin Chirtoaca told a news conference on Tuesday that the vault plan was “too much”. “The idea to erect a building for worship that would also enhance the city's architectural attraction was something that deserved to be supported, but an underground necropolis, this I cannot accept”, stated the Mayor. The Mayor said that the design submitted for approval to the Municipality didn't mention anything about an entire floor of vaults. “It was only indirectly suggested that the founders would later be interred there, as in the Metropolitan Cathedral. Between several vaults for the founders and an entire floor of crypts containing roughly 400 tombs, meaning an entire cemetery, is a huge difference. Therefore, I ordered the withdrawal of the construction license and of the urbanism certificate, and the cancellation of the land lease agreement”. The land in the Kentford square was let for a period of 50 years to a private entrepreneur for 1.2 million lei.
