Municipal authorities spent about MDL 1.5 mln to build a new stable on the territory of the Zoo in Chisinau for the 36 horses it takes care of. The new stable is almost finished and within several weeks it will be put into use, interim mayor Veaceslav Iordan told Info-Prim Neo. According to Iordan, the horses are reproducing, thus a new stable was necessary. The interim mayor mentioned that the Ministry of Internal Affairs is using 18 horses to patrol the city and the same number of horses is trained to draw carriages throughout the Zoo. Although he failed to name the number of horses the City Hall needs, Veaceslav Iordan mentioned that once the new stable will be ready, it will be possible to maintain 70 horses. At the same time, he mentioned that it is very expensive to maintain more horses. The mayor says that this year, horse police will begin patrolling the streets starting Easter. The decision of the local public authorities to introduce mounted police in the green areas of the city costs several million lei. Authorities announced that they purchased from Ukraine 20 purebred horses in 2005 and 2006, spending about USD 2-10 thousand for each animal. The former interim mayor Vasile Ursu was previously saying that the sum of MDL 1.5 mln is too high, asking the persons in charge to build the stable with MDL 300 thousand.
