The municipality of Chisinau needs about 230 new transport units overall to bring the number of functional means of transport in the capital city to 350 trolleybuses and 250 buses, Veaceslav Tarna, head of the General Public Transport Division, said at Tuesday’s meeting of the Chisinau City Hall. According to Tarna, 279 trolleybuses and 108 buses work in the municipality at present. But they cannot ensure the normal transportation of passengers. Tarna says that the public transport in the municipality works at maximum capacity. Certain itineraries must be modified to optimize the routes as the number of passengers increased from September. The latest acquisitions of transport were made at the end of 2005 and in the first half of 2006, when the municipality purchased 10 Ukrainian trolleybuses at the price of US$140,000 per unit and 20 German buses MAN for 20 mln lei altogether. The municipal authorities tried to outfit the old trolleybuses with new carosseries – method considered less costly than the purchase of new means of transport. On the first days of September, the daily collections of the Urban Bus Company rose to 108,000 lei, as against 95,000 lei in August. The daily incomes of the Electric Transport Direction Chisinau add up to 318,000 lei.
