Municipal services make no progress in placing bins on streets in Chisinau

The Mayor General of the capital city Dorin Chirtoaca says that the municipal services last week made no progress in locating bins on the streets. Moreover, some public officials say they should not be installed, because they will be either stolen or destroyed in a few days. Veaceslav Tarna, head of the General Department of Public Transport and Communication Ways, said that most of the public stops will have bins and the refuse will be removed twice a day. But the interim director of the Communal Housing Department Petru Gontea said there is no need to place extra bins on the streets. Dorin Chirtoaca mentioned that there are some norms which should be respected. “We cannot ask the population to maintain higher standards as long as we do not do it”. Veaceslav Tarna mentioned that most of the 236 public stations have two bins each. On the other hand, he says, there are problems with providing with bins the stations located in certain areas outside the city centre, such as Muncesti, Uzinelor Street, etc. According to him, the problems in these zones could be solved before the coming holidays, when many bins in the city centre will be replaced by new ones and the old ones will be installed in suburbs. If new bins are placed there, they could disappear in a few days. The Mayor said that the inspectors in those areas should be more actively involved in these activities so as they discuss with the people and persuade them not to destroy the bins. Veaceslav Tarna replied that the only solution is to weld the bins to the pillars of the stations. Petru Gornea mentioned that about 1 000 bins need to be installed within an area of 40-50 metres on the city’s streets. One bin costs 800 lei, Gornea says, specifying that he referred to big bins and not to the ordinary ones from public stops.
