Public street lighting in the municipality of Chisinau will be turned on and off according to the usual program of “Lumteh” company, as the municipal Commission for Exceptional Situations decided, IPN reports.

According to mayor Ion Ceban, the decision was taken following an analysis carried out by the municipality last week, when public street lighting in the capital city and in the suburban localities was turned on one hour later, at 8.00pm, and was turned off one hour earlier, at 6.00am.

It was reached the conclusion that this poses a major threat to the people’s safety, while the sum of 15,000 lei that is to be paid on electricity a day is not justified saving given that about 1 million people live in Chisinau. “The city is alive and the disconnection from the power supply at any hour on the streets, in yards and in parks poses imminent threats,” said the mayor.

The Commission also decided that at the request of the central public authorities, “Lumteh” will turn on or off the public street lighting in ordinary cases following written applications submitted at last three hours before the turning on and off of public street lighting, while in extraordinary, force majeure cases - following written applications submitted at least 30 minutes before the turning on and off of public street lighting.

The enterprises operating in the municipality of Chisinau are urged to ensure the observance of plans to optimize electricity consumption on condition that the technological processes that are vital for the citizens are not affected.

The CES recommends the business entities and residents of the municipality of Chisinau to assess the possibilities and to take measures to reduce electricity consumption, primarily at rush hour – between 7am and 11am and between 6pm and 11pm.
