MPs return to assembly hall

The Parliament will hold the first sitting of the autumn-winter session on September 9. The parliamentary group of the Communists Party may return to the sittings after a pause of six months, Info-Prim Neo reports. The agenda of the first sitting after vacation was discussed by the Parliament’s Standing Bureau on September 8. The meeting was attended by representatives of the Communist faction as well. Acting President Mihai Ghimpu said the Constitutional Court’s decision on the necessity of dissolving the legislative body will be made public on September 14. The MPs also examined the Liberal Democratic Party’s proposal to shorten the election campaign from 60 to 30 days. This initiative is not yet supported by the other three member parties of the governing alliance. Ion Plesca, the head of the parliamentary commission for appointments and immunities, said the Central Election Commission is to provide an answer over this initiative by the end of the day. Earlier, the Commission’s president Eugeniu Stirbu said the election campaign in most of the states last for minimum 60 days. “The campaign for the parliamentary elections of July 2009 lasted for 45 days and we encountered many difficulties and legislative constrains as we did not have enough time,” Stirbu said. Also today, the lawmakers of the ruling alliance held a closed-door meeting to discuss the steps that will be taken after Parliament is dissolved.
