MPs react to Socialists’ proposal to abrogate Law on Equality of Chances

The Socialist MPs’ proposal to abrogate the Law on Equality of Chances is populist and aimed at attracting political advantages, said MPs of the parliamentary alliance and of the opposition too. The Communist MPs supported yet the proposal, but consider there should be abrogated only the law’s articles concerning sexual minorities. The MPs reacted to the Socialists’ proposal and their decision to leave the April 27 sitting of Parliament, IPN reports.

The chairman of the Democratic Party Marian Lupu said in Parliament that all those who voted that law are supporters of the traditional values, of the traditional family. “We support the notions of mother and father. The given position is the position we promote as parties. The first bill that aroused reactions was withdrawn. A new bill was proposed in a year. This ensures the right to education, health and work and that’s all. We never had initiatives in Parliament that would change the notions of mother and father, the status of the traditional family or of those who can adopt children,” he stated.

Marian Lupu noted that this law refers to equality between the young and the old, between perfectly healthy people and those with special needs, between men and women. “The Socialists’ proposal is populist and sinful because it contains lies. The abrogation of this law would lead to the suppression of equality between men and women and would offend the elderly people and the people with special needs,” he stated.

Unaffiliated MP Iurie Leanca intervened, saying it is strange that the Socialists put forward such an initiative one day before the day the EU abolished the visa requirements for Moldovans two years ago. “This act brought great advantages as the elderly people can now see their grandchildren, while the young people can travel in the EU. I think the Socialists, by such statements, want only to destabilize the situation in the country,” he said.

The Liberals’ leader Mihai Ghimpu said it’s no use paying attention to this proposal. “He (Igor Dodon –e.n.) wants to become Head of State, but will not, if only kolkhoz president,” he stated.

Communist MP Oleg Reidman noted that the right to education, health care and work are guaranteed by the Constitution and a special law wasn’t necessary in this regard. The Law on Equality of Chances should be probably not fully abolished. Only the provisions that allow propagating the different sexual orientation and manipulation of underdeveloped persons should be annulled.

At the beginning of the April 27 sitting of the legislature, the Socialist MPs proposed a bill to abrogate the Law on Equality of Chances that was adopted in 2012. After the Speaker refused to put to the vote the inclusion of this bill in the agenda, the Socialists left the meeting in protest.
