MPs pass Moldova 2020 National Development Strategy

The lawmakers Friday adopted the bill on the Moldova 2020 National Development Strategy in the first reading. Despite the disagreements and questions, the MPs passed the strategy, saying it should be refined before it is examined in the second reading. The unaffiliated MPs abstained from voting. The leader of the group of Socialists Igor Dodon said the strategy is like the thesis of a student of the Academy of Economic Studies, while Mihai Godea said the strategy should be sent back to the author, Info-Prim Neo reports. The Government’s secretary general Victor Bodiu, who presented the strategy, said that its aim is to foster economic development and reduce poverty and it is based on seven long-term development priorities. Among the priorities is the adjustment of the education system to the labor market requirements for increasing productivity and the employment rate in economy, the increase in public investments in road infrastructure, diminution of financing costs by stepping up competition in the financial sector and developing the risk management instruments, improvement of the business climate, and improvement of energy efficiency and the use of renewable sources of energy. After the draft startgey was presented, Liberal-Democratic MP Valentina Stratan said this document does not cover many areas and focuses mainly on economic development, while Liberal MP Valeriu Munteanu said the strategy is a modest document that does not provide detailed solutions. Unaffiliated MP Igor Dodon said Moldova needs a more ambitious strategy that would include definite reforms, while independent Mihai Godea said that Moldova has many strategies and a new strategy should compromise clear and detailed reforms. Earlier, civil society said the document should be substantially reviewed.
