MPs: Obligation to self-isolate for 14 days expired with lifting of state of emergency

Deputy Speakers of Parliament Mihai Popușoi and Monica Babuc and Pro Moldova group member Vladimir Cebotari consider the MPs should come together for a sitting as swiftly as possible so as to satisfy the last conditions imposed by the EU for disbursing macro-financial assistance so that the Republic of Moldova could benefit from the next tranche of financial support, IPN reports.

Even if two MPs contracted COVID-19,
Mihai Popușoi considers that if the other MPs test negative, the sitting can be held by obeying the protection measures.

“We have one more confirmed case and hope there will be no other cases as most of my colleagues seem to have done the test and this was negative. In this connection, if everyone does the test by Wednesday and the result is negative, I see no impediments why we should not hold a Parliament siting by following the necessary protection rules. I do not see reasons for putting off the sitting,” he stated, noting it seems that someone intentionally wants to keep the MPs far from work and their obligations.

Pro Moldova group member Vladimir Cebotari is also against self-isolation until June 3. He said all those who invoke such a provision, refer to a decision taken by the Commission for Exceptional Situations when there was a state of emergency. As the state of emergency was lifted, the given provision is no longer valid. “There is now no regulation that obliges us to self-isolate for 14 days. On the other hand, this is irrational. On the other hand, this is not mandatory from legal viewpoint,” he stated in the talk show “Emphasis on Today” on TVR Moldova channel.

The MP voiced hope that the Parliament sitting will be eventually held online.

Deputy Speaker Monica Babuc said the sitting cannot be held through online platforms as this is not stipulated in the Parliament’s regulations. As to the interaction of the Democratic group with MP Eugeniu Nikiforchuk, Monica Babuc said the Democratic MPs later communicated also with other MPs, of other groups.

“The test showing the presence or absence of the virus cannot be 100% accurate before the expiry of the 14-day period. I say this not because I’m against calling our siting. I’m definitely not against. We must be yet responsible as it wasn’t only direct contact between an infected person and those who were near. We, those who interacted directly, later interacted also with other MPs,” stated Monica Babuc.
