MPs not sure who should manage Food Safety Agency
The lawmakers Thursday postponed voting in the second reading a bill that defines the powers of the future National Food Safety Agency and how it is managed as they could not reach an agreement in this respect, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Under the bill, the National Food Safety Agency will be managed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry. Liberal MP Gheorghe Brega said the Agency should be run by the Ministry of Health. “Otherwise, we will spend millions of lei on the treatment of patients. The Ministry of Health will identify more and more cases of poising,” he stated.
The head of the Liberal-Democratic parliamentary group Valeriu Strelet said that in many countries such agencies are managed by the Ministry of Agriculture. “Don’t make apocalyptic statements as the
Government presented its arguments,” he stated.
The Socialists’ leader Igor Dodon said the bill should be amended so that the National Food Safety Agency is managed by the Government. If not, the Socialists will not back the bill.
Earlier, when the bill was passed in the first reading, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry Viorel Gutu said the National Food Safety Agency will perform the duties of a number of ministries and agencies working in the field and the doubling of the inspection and supervision tasks will be thus removed.
According to the informative note to the bill, the foundation of the National Food Safety Agency is stipulated in the action plan on the creation of a Free Trade Area with the EU. The bill will be debated again next week.
