MPs demand to adopt statement on hydropower constructions on the Nistru

The MPs of “For Moldova” Platform, which includes the MPs of the Shor Party, suggest adopting a Parliament statement on the current and future impact of the hydropower constructions on the Nistru and non-admission of an imminent ecological catastrophe. They demand that President Maia Sandu should request her Ukrainian counterpart Volodimir Zelensky to do so that Ukraine stops the works to extend the Nistrean Hydropower Complex. The draft decision on the adoption of the statement was registered with the Parliament’s Secretariat, IPN reports.

“Parliament expresses its deep concern about the intention of the official Kiev to install and put into operation new turbines and to extend the Novodnestrovsk Hydroelectric Plant and to build a cascade of six hydropower plants on the Nistru, which is catastrophic for the Republic of Moldova,” runs the statement that is proposed for adoption.

The MPs quote experts in the field, saying that these projects could increase seismic activity in the region, the risk of erosion and landslides, could worsen the quality of water and affect the functioning of the ecosystem of the Medium and Lower Nistru and, consequently, would have a negative impact on the Black Sea ecosystem and could create significant difficulties in the supply of Moldova with water.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration is asked, according to the declaration, to immediately launch the actions needed to obtain the foreign partners’ assistance in solving the problem of the Nistru River. The Ministry of Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment is asked not to allow the territory situated upstream the barrage of the hydropower plant in Naslavcea to be conceded to Ukraine.
