MP suggests banning electoral banners

The electoral banners could be banned during election campaigns. A bill that regulates outdoor advertising in electoral periods was registered by unaffiliated MP Valeriu Giletski together with another six colleagues, IPN reports.

The MP said the electoral banners lead to excessive advertising of parties and candidates and distort the election campaign. “In the campaign that preceded the 2014 parliamentary elections, there was spent 13 million lei. In accordance with the 2016 state budget law, 40 million lei will be allocated for financing political parties this year. Given the planned presidential elections, it is very important for this money to be used for ensuring direct connection with the people, for increasing the level of political culture of people, not for making banners and other instruments of outdoor advertising,” he stated.

Valeriu Giletski noted that the principles on which the bill is based were implemented in the campaign prior to the last local elections. These are also used in elections in other European countries. “The implementation of the bill does not necessitate budget resources. We hope that the future candidates in elections will use the money to meet more often with the voters and to hold public debates,” he said.

Asked by the journalists if he will run in the presidential elections, Valeriu Giletski answered that he hasn’t yet taken a decision.
