Action and Solidarity Party MP Radu Marian said that the prosecutor general does not have the courage to come before the citizens and explain what is going on with the embezzled money from the banking system. He said that the report presented by the Prosecutor's Office is nothing more than a 4-5 page document, 80% of which represents a list of plans instead of results. According to him, the prosecutor general did not show up before Parliament because there is no progress in recovering the stolen money. The statements were expressed by the MP during the session when parliamentary hearings were to be held on the progress of recovering the money embezzled from the banking system.
According to the MP, the report mentions nothing regarding the establishment of international cooperation. He explained that without the assistance of international bodies, it is impossible to recover the money.
The MP said that the report only referred to cases which were sent to court during the first half of this year, but did not offer any clarity on the status of the cases that were brought to court at an earlier date. Similarly, the report does not mention funds that might have gone into the state budget. "Some assets that were seized were mentioned in the report. However, from seizure to repossession or liquidation is a very, very long way. The report does not explain the work flow within the Prosecutor's Office", said Radu Marian.
The MP said that the report failed to mention that half of the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office staff is involved in the bank fraud investigation, which over the course of six months "managed to produce four pages of nothing".
"The prosecutor general said that he is not appearing before Parliament because he has no legal obligation to do so. However, the prosecutor general has a moral and ethical obligation to come before Parliament and before the citizens and explain why he has failed to accomplish what he has set out to do. Which is why it is so important to have an evaluation mechanism of the prosecutor general. After all, if you don't do your job, you shouldn't stay in office," said the PAS MP.
