MP Alina Zotea supports amendments aimed at ensuring gender equality

Liberal lawmaker Alina Zotea pleads for a broader participation of women in decision-making by instituting a quota of at least 40% of women candidates on parties’ lists.

“I ardently support, alongside my Liberal colleagues, bill No. 180 of May 15, 2014 concerning the promotion of gender quality and women’s broader participation in decision-making. The political class of the Republic of Moldova must make effort to increase the women’s presence in the decision-making process and in executive posts,” Alina Zotea stated for IPN.

Moldova takes one of the last positions by the rate of women in high-ranking posts. It can improve its rating by instituting a gender quota of 40%. “The women have the same chances as men and should thus take an active party in the political life. In the local elections of 2015, it was proven that the women can compete alongside men and can emerge victorious in the first round. We must follow the example of the EU, which aims to ensure that the woman represent 50% of the members of the European Parliament and the European Commission,” said the MP.

Alina Zotea noted this initiative should be supported by the men from Moldova’s Parliament if they really want European democracy. The women MPs do not have to convince the men that they are useful and important in the political life as the activities they carried out together in time showed that the women cope well in key posts and are competent.

The amendments to the legislation on gender equality were adopted in the first reading and are to be passed in the final reading.
