Motorists avoid driving under the influence due to heavy penalties
After the updated Code of Administrative Offences came into force on May 31, the motorists became more cautious and avoid driving under the influence. The traffic police say that during the last days they identified fewer drunken drivers, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Tudor Capatana, press officer at the General Police Commissariat, said that the traffic police in Chisinau drew up 118 reports over violation of traffic rules on Wednesday. Six motorists were caught driving under the influence, while 11 drivers were caught speeding.
“After May 31, it is rather difficult to identify drunken drivers. We think this is due to the new penalties. Nobody wants to be imprisoned after drinking several glasses of wine or remain without license for 3 years. Earlier, we discovered by 10-12 drivers under the influence during 24 hours,” Capatana said.
Under the Code of Administrative Offences, the drivers that violate the traffic rules are fined up to 3,000 lei. The lowest fine is 20 lei. The Code stipulates different penalties for DUI and DWI (driving while intoxicated). The motorists caught driving while intoxicated are liable to fines of 8,000-10,000 lei, 200 to 240 hours of community service or imprisonment of up to one year.
