A man who in December 2022 fatally struck a 10-year-old on a pedestrian crossing near the Chisinau Airport while speeding has been sentenced to three years’ imprisonment, but will effectively serve only half of the term, as the other one has been suspended on four years of probation.

Prosecutors said they intend to appeal the sentence delivered by the Chisinau/Buiucani Court for being too lenient.

The motorist was also ordered to pay 600,000 lei (€31.400) in damages to the child’s family.

It was established that the motorist was going 35kmh over the speed limit at the time of the impact, and that he failed to stop at the crossing as other motorists did.
