As many as 846 girls born last year were named Sofia, while 904 boys - Maxim. These were the most popular baby names in 2014.

In a response to an inquiry by IPN, the Civil Status Service said among other female names given last year are Anastasia (787 girls) and Daria (700). 676 girls born in 2014 were called Maria and joined the other 126,000 women and girls bearing this name.

Alongside Maxim, the most popular male names are: David (884 boys born last year); Alexandru (731), and Artiom (700). Ion remains a widely met name in Moldova. A number of 683 boys were called so last year. There are 106,000 persons called Ion in Moldova.

Among the most unusual female names given last year are Hadasa, Jestina, Petronela, Rut, and Alesta. The double names are also popular, such as Elisa-Medeca, Teya-Sofia, Nica-Maline. The most unusual male names include Kirika, Ratmir, Damaris, Jimmi Singh, Ertas, Yagmur, Timur Han, and Ramazan.

Last year there were born 24,191 boys and 23,147 girls.
