Sofia, Amelia, David and Matei were the most popular names given to children last year. Other parents chose names that are met seldom, such as Alisar, Apolinaria and Cristal among girls and Ariel and Darwin among boys.
In a response to an inquiry made by IPN, the Public Services Agency says that 846 boys last year were named David, 663 – Matei, 568 – Bogdan, while 555 – Maxim. Among popular names are also Alexandru, Damian, Daniel, Artiom, Ion and Gabriel.
Sofia was the most popular baby girl name. 747 girls born in 2020 were given this name. 729 baby girls were named Amelia, 448 – Anastasia, 438 – Maria, 431 - Victoria, 430 – Daria. Eva, Alexandra, Evelina and Andreea were also popular.
Among the rarest baby boy names were Ariel, Darwin, Danik, Azur, Plamen, Sofian and Tamerlan. One boy was named Teador, another one – Jador, while the third – Romio.
Among baby girls, the most unusual names were Alisar, Apolinaria, Cristal, Devia, Alea, Alifia, Iuvinella, Karelya, Iunona și Flaviana.
The Public Services Agency’s data concerning birth certificates made in 2010 show that 27,274 children were registered last year, 14,306 of them being boys, while 12,968 being girls.
