Most of Moldovans support EU accession and want to participate in referendum, poll

The majority of Moldovan residents support the country’s accession to the European Union and want to participate in the referendum on enshrining the European course in the country’s Constitution. The number of supporters of the European integration increased from 57% in April to 63% in September. These are the results of the latest opinion poll conducted by CBS-AXA Center for Sociological Investigations and Marketing and commissioned by the Aspen Institute Romania, the Foreign Policy Association (APE) and WatchDog.md Community, IPN reports.

Almost 53% of the respondents believe that the majority of the population of the Republic of Moldova supports the country’s accession to the EU. Of the supporters of accession, 75% believe that the majority of Moldovans share their opinion. On the other hand, 65% of those who are against the EU membership consider that they form the majority.

The majority of respondents are determined to go to the polls to decide the country’s long-term strategic development goal. In August, about 66% of the respondents said that they would vote both in the presidential election and the referendum, and 10% were undecided, while in September the number of undecided persons decreased by 3.5 percentage points.

One of the toxic messages used by the opponents of the referendum is that the diaspora should not have the right to participate in the plebiscite. According to the authors of the survey, this not only seriously harms the right of any citizen to participate in the country’s electoral exercises, but is also a statement that is not supported by more than 60% of those surveyed.

Last but not least, particular political leaders insinuate that the constitutional referendum does not matter for the European integration process, urging the people not to express their opinion. However, the survey data shows that 69% of the respondents believe that the referendum of October 20 is an important step in the EU accession process.

The survey covered a sample of 1,021 people and was carried out during September 13-22. The maximum margin of sampling error is +3.1%.
